Over the past year, we’ve seen a rise in misinformation and disinformation as it relates to digital ID. Significant concerns have been raised about how Canada is approaching digital identity implementations with fears that the Canadian implementations will enable government surveillance and control. While the Canadian digital identity and credentials community is deeply committed to optional, inclusive, privacy protecting and secure digital identity and credentials, we need to understand these concerns and fears if we are going to work to address them.
The first thing to understand is that these fears are generated from:
- Disinformation – people actively and intentionally spreading information about digital identity that they know to be incorrect.
- Misinformation – people spreading information that is incorrect but they don’t know is incorrect; and
- Other implementations of digital ID around the globe that do not have the same safeguards in place as the implementations being pursued in Canada.
These three factors coming together have had a significant impact on the popular discussion in Canada. In February, our VP of Program Delivery presented a deep dive into misinformation and disinformation exploring social media and traditional media coverage.
